When placed upside down on the platter, it fits into the platter, preventing it from getting lost when playing records with small holes (like LPs). When flipped the other way, it correctly positions records with large holes (45s).
This is a current production item, but perfectly adaptable, tested, and tried on different versions of these turntables.
